Mechanical Seal for LPG pumps

Liquefied gas pumps are usually fitted with the following types of mechanical seals :

  • balanced mechanical seal
  • balanced mechanical seal with throttle bush
  • double mechanical seal in tandem or back to back
  • glandless construction using a magnetic coupling

The most common type of mechanical seal used nowadays on liquefied gas pumps is the single balanced type. On these pumps one seal is required only as the suction nozzle is axially positioned, and the shaft is supported at the suction end by an internal sleeve bearing. The mechanical seal therefore is fitted at the discharge end and thus sufficient liquid is available in the seal chamber even when the pump is operating under critical conditions. The use of a balanced mechanical seal limits the surface pressure on the seal faces. The type of seal used is restricted to that of recognised manufacturers who have a proven record of good seal design and good material combinations. This ensures a reliable, safe quality product.
